I am trying to completely remove the background from an image. I open the image, add an Alpha Channel, and then erase the background to all checkerboard. But when I export the image it still has a white background. Or what ever the color is selected for the background on the color selector.

Make sure you export in a format that supports transparency (this excludes JPEG)... PNG is usually the best choice.
