Inspired by frustration with trying to get Gimp to shake hands with my Wacom Intuos 3 pen tablet, I went searching for another software that would accomplish my simple goals without so much monkey business.

I discovered a possible interesting solution that I'm trying called SAI (http://www.systemax.jp/en/)
Gimp does a lot of cool stuff, but my simple desire to draw an ink line that shifted in thickness based on the stylus pressure seemed to be an insurmountable task, not to mention all the hoop-jumping just to get Wacom and Gimp to talk

SAI immediately made friends with Wacom, including the simple line drawing feature I was after. It also handles most if not all of the features that Gimp does.

It's not totally free, but the price (around $70 I think) is a far cry from having to rent Photoshop or Painter (idiotic concept)

Herewith, a simple quick sketch demonstrating the line feature. This incorporated layers, saves in native file format as well as Photoshop and the usuals (this is a jpg)

Nate, I'm very productive using these WACOM products with GIMP:
1. Intuos 4, model PTK-640, used at the desktop. Best professional tablet in my opinion.
2. The now very ancient Cintiq model DTZ W1200, used with Lenovo T61 at drawing table.
3. Very portable and wireless INTUOS pen & touch model CTH-480/S, used while on road.

I turn all the touch features off and decided that touch screens just will not work for me.
GIMP and the tablets can't tell the difference between touching or drawing. All sorts of unwanted things start to happen.
I've also discovered that turning off the laptop touch pads reduces other strange unwanted voo-doo GIMP activity.
To all the experts or developers who are out there, does anyone know what tablets that Gimp if compatible with, if any. Do we know if it has the ability to work with the pen tablets or was that not a consideration in the programming. I had bought a WACOM and have not yet tried to connect or use it. I'm praying that it will work and that I have not made a useless purchase.

Pat,

Every WACOM tablet I have ever purchased has worked very well with GIMP. That includes Windows and Linux.
In some cases, GIMP input settings may need to be properly adjusted by selecting:

Edit > Preferences > Input Devices > Configure Extended input Devices > Mode > [Disable] or [Screen] or [Window]

It's possible to have more than one input device enabled and confuse GIMP.
Careful selection of settings will determine failure or success.

Even more challenging is to configure Krita. Depending on computer graphics capability, it may appear the graphics tablet is to blame when in fact the graphics driver settings are the culprit.
Previous advice with Wacoms and Windows was make sure you get the most up-to-date driver for your tablet. You might already have that but check anyway. http://us.wacom.com/en/support/drivers

It looks like the latest are very recent, within the last month depending on model.

A quick search & this seems a reasonable run-down on installations. At least it is for Gimp 2.8 whereas beware of old postings. http://www.richardgnall.com/Wacom%20&%20...indows.pdf

Windows Gimp 2.8 is acknowledged as 'not-very-good' graphic-tablet support. No improvement forecast until maybe Gimp 3 so do not hold your breath.

Windows Gimp 2.6 is better (I am told) with tablets. Very easy to install Gimp 2.6 in parallel with Gimp 2.8 once Gimp 2.8 is installed. Gimp 2.6 installs to a different folder than 2.8 and once run creates a different gimp profile, C:\Users\your-name\.gimp-2.6

This is a US download mirror

Finally, I do have a Wacom tablet, an ancient Volito which gets pulled out now-and-again. Works fine in linux, not so good in Win10: see this, but do not take much notice.

Does it also work with blender too?
