It says of JPEG: "No other format comes close to achieving the same level of compression."

That must've been written before webp.

As far as I know, the Gimp documentation is more-or-less a single person and help is really needed. The document is a rolling update from previous documents, so statements like that will eventually be replaced.

Certainly was, I pulled out a Gimp 2.4 help (pdf) exactly the same paragraph Wink but lot more pages now than then. https://i.imgur.com/sSJ2TYw.jpg

Webp doesn't strike me as being vastly more efficient than JPEG...
