Turning a portrait into a bronze bust - megaman - 04-17-2017

Hi.

I posted the same topic a year ago onto a gimp forum, but I don't remember which one. As a result of the help I received, I was able to produce what I envisioned. It turns out that I want to do it again this year for a couple more of the kids in flag football.

Somehow, I cannot locate that thread anywhere on the net. I tried for so long and yet it seems like that thread completely disappeared. I even tried logging on to all kinds of gimp forums with a couple different email addresses I may have used, and none of the sites recognize them. It's as if there was another gimp forum, and that forum is now completely wiped out.

I saved the gimp file but when I open it, it's basically just the finished product. I can't for the life of me remember what steps I took to create the finished product. I really should have copied and pasted that thread and kept it in my email for future reference.

Basically I posted a thread showing these examples:

Actual bust:

A mock bust of Tom Coughlin:

[Image: uc?export=view&id=1VaXOpG1Y6IweGI4vnv1dmbRuxDXJQYpGpA]

This was my end result (I blanked out the kid's eyes and name due to privacy):

I got a lot of advice on how to do this and worked out really well. I'd love to be able to do this again.

Can anyone either help me locate that thread on the net, or provide me with some pointers on how to produce this look again?

Thanks for all the help.

Rings a bell, but since I follow most Gimp-related forums... Possibly on gimp-forums.com, because if you can't find it on Google, it must be on a dead forum. But If you have an idea of the date (file time stamps?) you can have some luck at the Internet Archive since it took regular snapshots. Aim for a snapshot not too long after you did it.

You're right about this forum. Looks very familiar. Unfortunately, none of the forums on those archived pages work.

I wonder why that forum went away. I used it a few times and it was great. I also like the format and look of that site.

The archived pages are "static" so you cannot just "search". You have navigate all by yourself Smile Have you got a date?

RE: Turning a portrait into a bronze bust - megaman - 04-17-2017

Oh okay, I see what you're saying. I can only guess it was between late May and early June.

How exactly do you do a search on this archive? I would go day by day if I knew how.

I wonder if that site isn't momentarimy broken. I used it a couple of time to retrieve things from Gimp-Forums.

Looks like it was bumpmapped. Or perhaps even bumpmapped with the Lighting Effects.

RE: Turning a portrait into a bronze bust - megaman - 04-19-2017

Thanks. Yes, must be bump mapped and some lighting.

First I was fooling around and took the original picture and went to Colors > Colorize. From there it has a Presets menu. I clicked on it out of curiosity. It showed me some presets named after dates. I found one from June of last year and clicked on it. And it turned the pic into a bronze color. I do not recall setting a preset back then, I figured it must have automatically? There were 8.

Then I went to bump map and played around and got the result below.

However, I am having trouble with lighting. I went to Filters>Light and Shadow>Lighting Effects, but I am not getting the desired result.

Anyway, as you can see, I am getting closer but still is not nearly as polished and detailed looking as what I came up with last year.

I remember that post from gimpforums.com. I think there were several contributors/references. Looked around for a link/archive without success. So something like this.

[attachment=481]
1. Separate the foreground from the background. Desaturate it. Make a copy and blur for the bumpmap part.

2. Add a layer in suitable colour over the head and put it into Overlay mode.

3. For just the head and colour layers make a new from visible
Bump map that using the  blurred copy (3A).  You can adjust the lighting effect a little using azimuth setting.
Go into color curves and pull the curve down a little to get a darker colour.
I then used Colors -> Hue-Saturation and increased the saturation a little, a matter of preference.

Add the base etc or if already there turn the visibility back on.

[attachment=482]I would suggest to use the G'MIC filter: Black&White/Emboss by Garagecoder, then apply a "bronze" look
