Eraser not working - SoundOfSilence02 - 01-29-2023

I use Gimp to clean up JPG files, primarily using the eraser tool. The eraser suddenly quit working, probably because I accidently clicked on something I shouldn't have. I have done Google searches and followed all the suggestions I've found. Nothing has worked. I have un-installed Gimp and reinstalled it. Didn't fix it. I have reset everything to defaults. Didn't fix it. Can anyone help?

Thank you!

Reinstalling Gimp rarely helps, since Gimp keeps your settings and won't overwrite them when you reinstall. And the problem may be with the image.

What do you mean by "Quit working" exactly? Can you make a screenshot of the Gimp UI with the layers and the tool options visible?

Otherwise, check the "lock" line at the top of the layers list. Any locks set?

By "quit working" I mean the eraser stopped erasing. Screenshot is attached.

Change your brush in the Tool Options to a normal brush, you're using the clipboard brush which is empty at that moment

Where are the "Tool Options" where I can change to a "normal brush"? I can't find it.

Towards the top right-hand corner of the screenshot that you posted.

As the previous post indicated

I do wish the Gimp Devs would have a "beginners" mode where the Docks came pre-locked instead of leaving it up to the user. Fewer tabs might be a good idea as well.

By having a setup as your screenshot you cannot have brushes and tool options open at the same time.

It it is worth looking at the Gimp 2.8 layout which IMHO was a sensible starting point. https://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/images/using/single-window.png

Thank you for your suggestions.

I found that I have a computer with 2.8 installed and I should be able to finish my project using that version. First order of business will be to uninstall 2.10, since it's broken. This thread can now be closed.

I had the same issue and FINALLY found the problem. I had somehow clicked on the layer and selected a little tiny itty bitty selection. Because I had a selection, the rest of the layer could not be edited... Gimp wanted me to edit only the selection.

So while on that layer, go to the top, go to "SELECT" and choose NONE. (If "none" is grayed out, you are either not on the right layer OR this is not your solution.

A selection does not matter layers, thus if it's grayed it's ONLY because there are NO selection Wink
