A really good way is what you are already doing, experimenting. The big snag with this is when you get an effect by serendipity, unless you keep good notes there is no real way of determining what has been done when you come back to it at a later date.  Keep plenty of layers. keep stage points using New-from Visible, save xcf frequently in stages but not a total solution.
