Gimp 2.10.0 icon size
#1
I just installed Gimp 2.10.0 and I find that the size of the icons on my 4K screen are too tiny to use.

(As an example, on my 15" diag. screen, the brush icons are approximately 0.10 inches wide, tool icons are approx. 0.15 inches
When using Gimp 2.8 on my older 1K screen, these icons are 0.3 inches wide)

Is there a way to increase the size of everything ?

Thanks in advance

Maybe not everything easily

There are similar posts if you search, however

You can try upping the size of the tool box icons in `Edit -> Preferences ->Icon Theme

The drop down menu in resources docks give options on display and size.

Text often has a setting in the theme 'code' but not my area of expertise.

Thank you for your helpful note.

I changed the Edit - Preferences - Icon Theme - Custom Icon Size to "HUGE" and in so doing I was able to increase the size of the tool icons from 0.10 to 0.15 inches. Unfortunately, with my old eyes, these icons are barely usable. I was able to increase the size of the brushes using your suggestion.

HOWEVER, there are still icons/widgets that are absurdly small. As an example, the "Configure this tab" widget that allows me to change the brush sizes is so tiny that I didn't see it until I looked at the example that you posted. On my 15" 4K screen, this widget is approximately 0.03 inches wide.

I would encourage the development team to spend more time fixing the user interface for an otherwise excellent application.

As it stands, using Gimp on my 4K display gives me a migraine.

There are no gimp devs that visit this forum.

However I understand that they are aware of the issue. Comes down to manpower and someone volunteering to create suitable HD themes.

I recall an article where 4k displays on small monitors can "revert" to a lower resolution for applications such as Gimp. Worth a search.

Hi, dmcentee!

The very first thing I'd do if I were you is enabling High DPI scaling in windows. In most situations enabling the scaling should influence sizing of every application you use, from your web browser to MS Office because applications should take the system-wide scaling factor into account.

I'm not old, my display is 22" 1920x1080 (102.4 ppi i.e. pixels per inch) and yet I use system-wide scaling of 125% (I'm on Windows 7, if that matters in any way). You can even set a non-standard value. From calculations I "should" set that scaling to 02.46/96=1.07 instead of 1.25 (theoretically) but I found it to have too little effect.

It isn't reversible. Set the value, log off and try it. If it doesn't influence GIMP then revert it. I'd use 150% scaling to test this as it's going to reveal right away whether GIMP's sizing is influenced by system-wide scaling. Why I won't do it for you? Because it would probably mess my desktop icon layout.
