The Latest Gimp 3 AppImage From The Gimp Dev Team
#11
Hi rich, I've been using the appimages a bit and noticed there is no ability to link layers or make layer groups. I don't know if they intend to implement this again or if it will be replaced by something else.

Also 'create a new image' above an existing image and then expanding it covers-up the tools and layers/brushes boxes. This seems very buggy to me.

If CmykStudent is reading this maybe he knows?

Not a problem here: No link icon with Gimp3
Select the layers with a click and ctrl-click Then click drag into a layer group.
There is even a plugin floating about to do it for you. Example: https://i.imgur.com/xwKWa95.mp4
This is using the Gimp 3.0 RC1 I downloaded today.

Not able to reproduce that but not sure of your workflow.

Yes, really appreciate his advice.

The issue of a new canvas covering the tools and layers dialogs happens when not in 'single-window mode'.

I could make layer groups but could not unpack them.

I got the shift-click on hiding/seeing layers and also the locking ability. Notice 'Fx' has not been implemented yet.

The new 160Mb appimages are very good to experiment without installing.

Yes, something strange with multi-window mode. With KDE easy to pin windows on top but that fails as well. I wonder if it is a linux "thing".  This an example incase CMYK student comes along. https://i.imgur.com/TcfEAZV.mp4 Multi window mode is still useful but I did read a comment from the devs that might be dropped in the future.

I do have a Gimp3 python plugin that adds selected layers to a layer group. Probably someone will make one to unpack. All I do at the moment is select the layers and drag out of the group.

Working here, but not all filters are implented as "layer effects"

Yes, very good. I replaced previous version with the one I downloaded yesterday. Even the home compiled gimp_gmic_qt ('buntu 24.04) plugin works without any "tweaking".

rich2005: Hi! I don't think the plan is to "drop" multi-window mode so much as it is to combine the best of both single window and multi-window mode so there's no split. A lot of the issues with MWM in 3.0 are likely because most of the developers use Single Window Mode, so we didn't notice the problems (that's why user testing is so important for 3.0). I'll see if I can replicate what you showed in the video and fix if I can - thanks for the report!

And yes, currently only GEGL filters with GUIs are non-destructive. That covers most of them, but not all. Hopefully more filters can be converted to GEGL (or at least have a GEGL version while leaving legacy in place).

Glad to hear the "official" AppImage is working well - Bruno Lopes worked hard on it! Hopefully it can become a regular download like Flatpak in the future.

Thanks CmykStudent.

I think my issues are caused by the Xfce desktop environment on the Linux boxes I use.
I read somewhere that Gimp 3 will not be supporting it.

So no bug report because it's easy to use another desktop environment on linux. Smile

Also a lot of respect to the appimage team. Going from plan to reality in 6 months with some fast progress towards the end is amazing. All the best for your MR's on the main project.

MWM is the only way I see to benefit from 1) more than one screen and 2) multiple views. But if you make image views dockable, then SWM is just a big dock, and then I can have my dream of an image window with the histogram below it.

The Gimp3 AppImage looks like it will be coming out weekly.
They found a bug in the appimage build script and decided to separate the appimage.

I haven't found a working appimage from this process yet.
