bend-path for Gimp 3
#1
I have tried...Wink Inkscape path envelope-deform and then into gimp. Painfull.

This is Ofnuts ofn-bend-path plugin for Gimp 2.10 run through AI to convert to Gimp 3... Minor differences but it does work. At least it works this week, no guarantee that it will work after next Gimp update.  Unzip attachment and put in your User plug-ins folder.

For those that have not come across it, it works like this.

(1) You have a path that you want to deform. Very often text for a logo, (use layer -> Text to Path)  There is a second path, the envelope. It consists of two stokes (no more, no less) to contain the deformed path. It has to be a little wider than the first path. The order you make them does not matter.

(2) The plugin registers in Filters->Render->Bend Path...  Some parameters to set, make a choice.

(3) Browse for those paths you made, Path to bend  and Envelope.

OK the plugin and there is a new deformed path.

The guides parameter uses two horizontal guides which applies an offset.

What used to work but (AFAIK) not now. Gimp 2.10 linked layers paths worked, Gimp 3 selected layers paths - no.

There is a substantial thread on Ofnuts Gimp 2.10 plugin here: https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-ofn-bend-path

Thank you, Rich.
Works for me, too

Thanks Rich.

It looks to be working here too, apart from bend several paths in one call as you already explained.

What version of bend path did you give the AI? The last two entries in the change history of the version I downloaded from Ofnuts source forge are:

Code:
v0.5: 2022-12-04 Improve heuristics to determine top & bottom of envelope
v0.6: 2023-30-01 Work on several linked paths
Add undo group and exceptions handling

Which AI did you use?
Did you have to intervene much or did the AI make the conversion without much instruction?

This is the first time I've come across using a chooser. How are you finding using it? I'm finding it doesn't remember the paths chosen. Perhaps that's a general thing with the current choosers.

I use Linux with an Xfce desktop environment so expect to see the OK button on the bottom right.  I'm seeing this for the bend path dialog but for the path chooser I'm seeing the cancel button on the bottom right. In your pictures your buttons are consistent, OK on the left, Cancel on the bottom right.  Do you explicitly set the alternative button order or are you using a desktop environment that uses it? I'm surprised mine is inconsistent so that maybe an issue with choosers too.

I did take the version I use with my Gimp 2.10 , that is v.05 , my bad for not checking for a later version.

The free version Claude , supposed to be best for code

Never used AI before, probably never will again. I uploaded the code, asked for a gimp 2.10 to Gimp 3 fix and (from memory) it ran through twice and came up with that new code. I suspect I was lucky in that it worked straight-off.

The only other I can think of at the moment is resynthesizer, the new gui, That does not retain the input / output maps if used. There is a save / recall function there as well that does not work. Not that bothered for my use. It does save settings in ~/.config/GIMP/3.2/plug-in-settings/GimpProcedureConfigRun-ofn-bend-path.last (which I think are ignored)

All the same here. Guessing it comes from KDE ( I am still mostly using kubuntu 24.04) . Did the devs not say they were using a more KDE-ish format ?

Thanks Rich,

v0.6: would be a bit harder as it relies on the 2.10 ability to link paths.  I may have a quick try using colour tags to identify the paths instead.  The user setting colour tags is a bit more cumbersome than the old links though.

Given the current choosers don't work with the repeat e.g. Repeat "Bend Path", I suppose an alternative would be to use a string argument for the path names. That would be more cumbersome for the user to type or copy/paste the names but then the repeat would work.

KDE deliberately sets the GTK setting gtk-alternative-button-order to True so that makes the button order OK on the left and Cancel on the right. As far as I know gimp should have platform-aware button ordering e.g. it's discussed here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/work_items/6091 If that's still the case the inconsistency I'm seeing is a bug.
