My system is ubuntu 16.04. My video card recognizes what monitor is attached. I checked the "try to use system monitor profile" in the preference.

Do I need to calibrate the display like this attachment is explaining?

Probably not, unless you intend to set up as a professional sometime.

If you have a decent monitor, you might get a monitor profile that matches. Look for a file something.icm For example, my desktop has a IIYAMA monitor and a monitor profile PL2473HD.icm That goes in Edit-> Preferences -> Colour Management -> Monitor Profile

This laptop, unknown display, no icm file. I would need to buy a calibration device, not going to happen.

If you ever edit then print off a photograph, you often find it comes out darker than expected. Most people have their monitors too bright.

Some simple adjustments go a long way. See: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutoria...ration.htm

Other than that have a look in 'buntu system settings. Not sure what the regular ubuntu provides but kubuntu 16.04 has system adjustments like this: https://i.imgur.com/zrqqEQ8.jpg
