This is frustrating, and I don't know what is causing it.

For most of the time, Drop-Shadow tool works just fine. But for whatever reason, after a certain amount of time, it will start having this problem where no matter which Layer I select for the tool, it will cause the entire Canvas to have a Drop-Shadow, expanding the size of the Canvas and exposing transparency underneath.

This has happened to me twice, so far, with two different project files.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you
Which drop shadow tool are you using?

There is the Gimp 2.8 / Gimp 2.10 legacy filter which has a tick box to allow resizing. That will add transparency to the canvas. example: https://i.imgur.com/OEKJtuU.jpg

or

The GEGL drop shadow which works in a different way, need transparency in the layer, as far as I know that that works up to the layer boundary and no further. (at least it does for me)

I was using the Legacy Tool... but allowing resizing hadn't caused me issues before.

I am trying to add drop-shadows to a text layer. Up until this point, an hour into the project, the Legacy Filter was working just fine. Now, it just isn't.

It seems as though the Filter selects the whole Canvas mid-process rather than doing what I tell it to do (only Filter one Layer).

It's frustrating because it seems to do it without me doing anything different than what I was already doing. Just, over a certain amount of time, the program decides to tell me "screw you", and stop functioning correctly.

I THINK I JUST FIGURED IT OUT...

I had "Selected All". Despite selecting a Layer, for whatever reason the program will keep All selected unless I hit "Select None".

That seems to be why it applies the filter to the whole Canvas despite having only one Layer selected in the Layers Window.
Select all, the drop shadow with allow resizing adds transparent borders to accommodate the drop shadow.

Difficult to give an opinion from your screenshot.

If you are using Gimp 2.10 the GEGL drop shadow adds a shadow to the text characters directly on the canvas.

Yes, but I prefer to create a separate Layer for the Drop-Shadows, and the Legacy tool seems to be the only one of the two that does this.
