How would you recreate this colorful 3D extrusion in Gimp ?

No time to fully answer now (I haver servers to nurse). But already answered: http://gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=11318 (with suitable "hard edges" gradient of course).

That is a solution, although i dislike that you have to make another gradient.
Because in the PS version, the colors are generated automatically?

What PS version ?
I made my version with Gimp and without a gradient.

What are the layermasks in your effect for ? I cant see it properly, the screenshot is so small.

Apparently the logo comes from an anime, so i wouldnt be surprised if it was handdrawn.
