Currently just getting started using Gimp 2.8 on Mac with High Sierra

Is there any advantage to upgrading to 2.10?

If I upgrade, is it necessary to first delete my current version?
2.10 is a very significant upgrade from 2.8. For me the most interesting changes are: 1) you can process pictures with more than 8-bit/Channel. This makes a big difference, because it reduces round-off errors that crept in pretty quickly in previous versions, 2) some tools can be adjusted on-canvas: the blend tool alone would be worth upgrading. 3) many tools have a "split view", you can see side-by-side the before/after versions of your image.
