Its for PS and AI, but you can use the included png's and convert them to a Gimp .pat file yourself.

Gimp can use PNG directly as patterns.

what is the benefit of a .pat file then ?
1) That way since 2.6 I think.

2) The only one I can think of is that the name shown in the Patterns list is not limited by filename constraints. Double-edge sword anyway, since it can be hard to determine from which file comes a given pattern. in this case..
well, its definitely a timesaver
