You mean along the top? You need to be in Single Window mode, chosen from the Windows menu on the top bar.

I can't get psd or xcf files to show as thumbnails. Jpeg, png are fine. I have tried sage thumbs which works for psd but not xcf. I had to reboot my computer and now I cant remember what I installed to get them to show as thumbnails not just the gimp or psd file image.

Sage thumbs https://sourceforge.net/projects/sagethumbs/files/ is not going to work with Gimp xcf files. It uses a 5 year old dll from XnView which was never very good with Gimp format. The old Gimp 2.8 .xcf format and you might get the top layer of a multi layer file. The new Gimp 2.10 format does not show at all, too new. screenshot https://i.imgur.com/mez2BST.jpg
You can use the Gimp File -> Open menu which shows a preview https://i.imgur.com/GozCjjT.jpg
