I just put the picture into Microsoft word with a text box overlay to test it that way. Gimp doesn't have alll the fonts Word has, but they have most. Also, I notice in gimp sometimes when you search for the name of the font by typing it into the font type area, if you put too many letters the name disappears even though it has it..like with Maiandra GD, if you put 'ma' it's fine but once you put the 'i' it disappears off the list!

Not exactly want you want, but you can render a font to a file to see what it looks like, either temporary or save as a reference file.
