How do I make these gridlines disappear

They are guides. Remove them using Image -> Guides -> Remove all guides

Very useful, set a guide by click-drag from a ruler. Saved with Gimp .xcf format. If you want to keep but not see: Untick View -> Show guides (shift-ctrl-t)
