There are a few possibilities to create a spirograph design in gimp using plugins or filters (ex.: GMic-Qt /Testing / Samj / Rendering / Spirographe). One can also use other software with other/more possibilities. The one I like is 'spirograph 2' :

If the design made with this generator is according to one want, then one can click on the button 'Show SVG', copy the generated data from the window that show up, paste it in notebook and save it as a .svg file. One can load this file with all the used colors in Inkscape or as paths in gimp.
