I am a novice Gimp user, use version 2.10.18 on Linux, and am trying to install some *.ttf fonts.  I tried following the steps in the documentation but the fonts aren't showing up.

  1. I've put the files in my personal Gimp directory such as $HOME/.gimp-2.8/fonts/Exo-Regular.ttf
  2. I used the refresh button in the font dialog - the fonts are not present in Gimp
  3. I restarted Gimp - the fonts are still not present

What am I doing wrong?  I realize the directory is .gimp-2.8 and not .gimp-2.10 but that's what was in my home directory.  Should I rename the directory?

No.

The location of the Gimp 2.10 user profile can vary depending on the installation - flatpak / snap / appimage / from distro repository. Gimp 2.10.18 so guessing it is the latter. Regardless if you start Gimp then Edit -> Preferences -> Folders then expand the Folders section and the path to the correct folder is shown. Almost sure to be ~/.config/GIMP/2.10/fonts/

Same as Gimp 2.8 you can add a path to another folder if you want.

One thing to look out for, Gimp 2.10 will try and migrate settings & resources - scripts / plug-ins ...from ~/.gimp-2.8  to ~/.config/GIMP/2.10  and not all will be compatible. Review what is there.

Thanks!  That worked!
