Hello guys,
I'm trying to get the hang of grids but really struggling, does anyone have a step by step guide?
I need to print off some tiles, on a piece of paper 60in by 40in, 152.400cm by 101.600cm.
I keep trying to put a grid on it with the cells 32.5cm by 21.5cm but they keep on coming out wrong and I don't know why, can someone talk me through it?

Gimp does not work in real world distance units, Gimp works in pixels and they are connected to a print size by the print resolution.
Open your image and give us the pixel size you see top of the Gimp window, and we will take it from there. It might be that the Gimp grid tool is not the best way forward.

You need to do a bit of arithmetic, Gimp can do some of it for you.
First if you open
Image -> Print Size and set all the units to centimetres, that shows the resolution as 118.11 pixels per cm. One centimetre = 118.11 pixels

Now get your calculator out.
If you want a spacing of 32.5 cm then you convert to pixels 32.5 x 118.11 = 3838 pixels and 21.5 x 118.11 = 2539 pixels
...and those are the values you use in the grid filter.

With the image being a monster size, it is not that easy to enter those values in the Grid settings. Break the link between Width and Height then my way is repeatedly hit delete to remove the default 32 then key the larger value in. example:

Ok so completely au fait with pixels and size etc, I need to now adjust the grid position, can you tell me how to do that, either move the grid or the background?

You just change the grid offset in the Grid pattern dialog?
Otherwise you can also move the layer if you have added some margins.
As Ofnuts but with some screen shots.
1. Adjust the offset values and move the grid in realtime

2. Add a new transparent layer Layer -> New Layer. You can set a size there larger than the canvas size.
To see the extents of that layer use View -> Show All
Make the grid as before in that new layer
Use the move tool to place the grid as required.
Turn View -> Show All off.

I have one more question if I may, so I have my grid I'm happy with it but I want to colour every cell on the grid differently but when I try to in Gimp the whole background gets coloured, ie the program isn't seeing the grid or the grid isn't part of the image, how do I make it part of the image so I can colour each cell with bucket fill? Thank you!
