I recall reading discussions on converting text to single stroke paths, most likely years ago, and cannot seem to find the discussion. Or perhaps I was dreaming it was possible and woke up and thought it was real. I am aware that text can be created to single stroke paths, and you can even buy such fonts, but...I seriously thought Ofnuts had already created this plugin. Getting old sucks, some days...
Maybe subconsciously you're referring to this...

No, actually, it wasn't that. It was actually http://gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1503#p18426

I was looking for engraving fonts for the CNC. I just couldn't remember what the topic was to do the proper searches.

Gimp sort of dropped support for engraving fonts in 2.8 (it used to work in 2.6).

I have not done anything for this, but I have better googling skills Smile, and a bunch of answers are right here.

Center-line trace using AutoTrace via the Gimp plugin or  Inkscape just does not work for text characters. Too many sharp corners etc.

Inkscape does have a Hershey Text extension and the text saved as a svg.

This a comparison of that Inkscape hershey txt and a Gimp / Autotrace center-line (kubuntu 20.04 / Gimp 2.10.32

Not impossible to tweak the path but depends how keen you are. As easy to trace by hand.
If you want a few ready made ones there are some here:

The unclose path post is actually what got us started on rain dancing, and the formation of GLAD, who hand out Wilburs to esteemed coders.

Everyone else, thank you for your participation. I think I can do a better job centerlining text by hand, in most cases. Thank you, Blighty, for the files.
