I ended up "solving" the problem by switching the ctrl and shift modified commands to single letter commands.
My stylus is currently set to left, middle, and right mouse buttons. I haven't thought about them in a long time since Kubuntu was capturing them for its own purposes. In OpenSuse they are doing useful GIMP things again. Nice.
