Full Version: How to precisely cut texture to match alpha channel?

Hi.
First sorry if my word choise is confusing, Im an amateur so I might not understand some term.
Im trying to edit game asset. How do I make a cut on texture to precisely match the alpha channel shape? Using fuzzy tool can be done but it only make a solid cut, some semi transparent will made into solid cut.
In layman's term, how do I make alpha channel as a cast and use it to cut a flat texture so that it will have the exact same transparency?

Edit: Some illutration what Im trying to do.

I don't understand the question... if you have to cut, there is no alpha channel yet. If you want to extract a shape from a uniform background, just just make the background transparent, see here for techniques. If the shape is already over a transparent background, you can repaint it after alpha-locking it (see same tutorial for examples).
I don't understand it either. I wonder if it is one of those games where an alpha channel is used for other purposes. I do not bother with games graphics but as a texture seems common.

What format is the image, can you post it ?
or what happens if you use Layers -> Mask -> Add Layer Mask then Layers Alpha Chanel

Do you get a layer mask that look like the shape ?

Its PNG. Yes technically I want that step you mentioned above with the results as a background with transparency not the alpha channel. I want to use the default alpha channel as boundaries to cut uniform image and replace the original texture.
So this is the idea of what Im trying to do.
1. Original game asset (PNG)
2. I want to replace arm texture (originaly metal) with a bare skin by using another image.
3. Trying to cut the arm from the image to match the shape of metal texture from original asset.

Basically do that, or am I just make things more complicated?

* Add a new layer
* Paste a piece of skin that totally overlays the metal part and is even a bit larger
* On the layer with skin: right click in layer list, then Composite mode ➤ Clip to backdrop
