So after ofnuts boggled my mind with his sine wave magic, i used a bw bi-linear gradient, with a duplicate set to 'Difference', posterized to get this seamless pattern:

After bumpmapping the pattern into a grey layer, curves and a bit of processing, then G'MIC Sepia, i got this, which i like for its 3D-ish quality:

Nice, but shadows are a bit dark, aren't they?

Played around with other values and it came out quite flat.

Made another one, which has other problems :\

Limit is 500K per picture, if you post several (or a tile-able a bit) the forum denizens can reconstruct it themselves.

Oh, thats why. I didnt get any error messages i think.

The colors/values on the inner ornament are wrong, but i dont know how to get it right.
It seems to lack contrast but that doesnt fix it.
