I would recommend to stop to listen those bozos on youtube or wherever else because they just want to make views.
There is a development which is called 2.99.16 and is downloadable on the official GIMP website https://gimp.org but it's a development version, it for testing, not "working" with it, it's quite "stable" though, thus you can try it, on Linux we can have both installed, read what they say on the GIMP website for the Microsoft's Windows OS, but I think you can have both as well.
