I love the ShareX function called "Cut out" - where you can cut out a middle section of an image and then it automatically merges the left/right or upper/lower parts of the image (see attached screenshot from ShareX).
Can this be done just as easily with GIMP?

Yes.
At least using my newest filter - Liquid Rescale.
By selecting the middle area of the image to be removed, this plugin automates the entire process.
But even using the basic Gimp tools it is possible to do this, just cut and then align the separate parts using the alignment tool.

I had never really understood how this filter (Zealous Crop) worked. That's why I practically don't use it.
It seemed to me to do the same thing as 'Crop to Content' - big mistake on my part.
