Full Version: Where are instructions for how to actually USE Plug-Ins?

I can install Plug-Ins made by the "Ofnuts" person. But I can't see anywhere at all instructions as to how to actually find each tool, once installed, on the UI. Am I missing something? Does everyone else just automatically know exactly in which hidden corner of the interface each of the hundreds of Plug-Ins is stored? 

I'm trying to use the "Path-Inbetweener" and "Stroke-Visible-Lines" Plug-Ins. Apparently the former is used before the latter; but I've searched every single menu-tab and can't find anything that looks like it corresponds to what the "Path-Inbetweener" Plug-In is supposed to do.
There is no 'tabs' for these plugins. After you have a path you need to right click on your path (in your paths list) and where tools or decorate show up click on the arrow and you will see the menu of the ones you have installed

If you download that script from sourceforge it comes with a documentation file ( like almost everything by Ofnuts).
I bet that file explains all you need to know.

There are various ways to find a menu entry for a plugin.

In Help -> Plugin Browser you can enter a search term relating to the plugin and when you find it there is a path reference.

In this case <vectors> refers to the paths context menu. Right click to bring it up (I detached it here because it is a bit on the long side)

Another way is using the GImp 2.10 search tool the / - ? key. Put in a search term relevant to the plugin and when you click on an entry it brings up the tool dialogue.

You can also open a script in a text editor and look at the registration entry usually at the bottom of the script.

Most of my plug-ins are packaged as a ZIP. Except for very trivial plugins, there is a HTML file (and often several accompanying PNG/JPG in the ZIP, that you can open in y favorite browser. This said, yes, I missed the script location in ofn-path-inbetweener. Like many/most of my path scripts, it is accessed in the right-click menu of the Paths list.

Stroke-Visible-Lines isn't mine. I have an ofn-stroke-fill-paths that may do the same.

to anyone who comes in the future, the manual for this particular Plug-In does NOT have the information in question; hence why i posted in the first-place, as, yes, of course i was able to see and read the manual before posting.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. Opening the file in a text-editor doesn't give any more information regarding the path of the Plug-In other than the first method you described though. Also, where is more information about the "Path References", like "<vectors>" please?

why is the programme cramming all my replies to different people onto the SAME reply?? in what world does it make any sense to do that? which university text-book do i need to read to enlighten myself on the sophisticated intricacies of the workings of this evolved forum?

To not have multiple posts of the same author for the same thread following each one in a row, there is a 2 or 3 hours buffer where the post will be added to its previous post. If and only if no one did answer in between during that time.

Multiple advantage to this,
  • it take less space to read, as it just one post
  • it requests less connections to the data base (arguable, but when searching a post it's also easier on the list)
  • accumulated posts during this buffer period are separated by a horizontal line, aesthetically it looks better to me (but that strictly personal Big Grin )
last that come to my mind, it might also be related with the number of total posts of a user to climb between "Title", and not "cheating" by sending consecutive short posts, but for that last one, the idea came to me at the last moment writing this, and I'm really not sure it was made for, although let's not forget that the software of this forum is MyBB and this means it's not only for this forum, but it is used by many many forum types around the world and that might be an activated option by default.

It's not  a mask, it's a pareidolic USB plug.

And use the ofn prefix of the plugins and my user name are related; It's a common practice to prefix you script with your "signature" because script from various authors would bear the same name, and this would prevent using them on the same machine (not speaking of the confusion when discussing them in forums).

Also, way too old for teenage jokes...

I probably use viewing a text script / plugin to find its menu location as much as anything else. If I am trying out a new one, then I look at it when installing in the appropriate user folder. A bit easier since I use linux. Otherwise look at the Help -> Plug-in Browser entry.

Most are obvious, you hit on <vectors> = paths which is not so clear. Others easy to grasp. Some examples.

brushmanager, menu="<Brushes>" a context, right click in the brushes dock

"RMA_path_blend" "<Image>/Filters/Render" <Image> is very common. It is the main menu and following that it is the menu location.

python_fu_fontasia, menu = "<Image>/Windows/" In the Windows drop down. Not often used.

script-fu-scale_pattern" "<Patterns>/Scale Pattern..." Another right-click context in the patterns dock.

Then some that claim their territory and make their own entry(s) in the main menu.
menu="<Image>/Diego/Ancillary/Colours"

The great thing about this system is, you can edit the script and change the menu entry to where you want it.
