I'm a cartoonist who uses GIMP to create my comics. I suddenly haven't been able to save my work. I tried some of the obvious workarounds to get past this. (Updated from GIMP 2.10 34 to 36. Tried renaming files, moving pages to other folders, etc.) Nothing seems to work and I'm beginning to think all my work is lost.
I'll attach the screenshots of the messages I get. The first one I get when I bring up a file says "Could not read the contents" Then when I try to save, it says "Error Truncating file. Permission denied"

I would appreciate any advice, but bear in mind I will need it explained like I am 5 years old. (Not very tech savvy, I'm afraid.)

Possibly Windows is paranoid and doesn't recognize the new executable and prevents it from wiring to disk. There is probably a "security center" app somewhere where you can convince Windows that your new Gimp(and all its plugins) is OK.

If that is the problem, windows usually gives the option, when it blocks it to run anyway when you first download it.

Have you tried with a new file. The other one if your using it all the time and just changing it a little may have become corrupted
For the first screenshot, could be physical, check replace the disk's wire, or a power management thingy.
I want to thank everyone for their replies. I'm truly greatful. Unfortunately, I can't really make anything from the advice. As I said I'm not very tech savvy, meaning if I'm to try something I need explicit instructions as in "Open X. Click tab Y. Type in Z" etc.
I've also tried using a new software site akin to GIMP (not sure I'm allowed to say which one) but I can't open the files there either because they don't support XCF files. So basically I'm still on square one.

Did you tried to drag and drop that XCF from the drive D to your Desktop, and open it from there?

A computer and Gimp are just tools to use. No good claiming 5 year old status.

Probably lost, since you have tried moving the files to more regular folders. Do you have backups of your files from an earlier date which open in GIMP ?
There are unanswered questions from your screenshots and previous posts.
Can you make a new blank test.xcf file and save it to say 'Pictures' ? Does that work ? If it does, then it is not Gimp.
Your Drive (D: ) SDHC This an SD card in a card reader/sd slot ? These can be write protected with a slider on the card. Even without that, SD cards can become write-only if closed unexpectedly. EDIT: A load about it here:

Looking at your screenshot(9) Possible problems BOURBON 12 / ΣB " (n.HBF Why that sigmaB and what is a n.HBF ? Can you rename that folder to something more regular - no spaces - no extended characters.

Error truncating file: Permission denied and the Metadata won't be visible warning. Have you added a load of metadata to the file ? There is a copyright status entry Try deleting some/all metadata. It is in Image -> Metadata -> Edit Metadata
Nothing else useful when it comes to Gimp .xcf files Krita can open
older files but not write them. Export to an openraster (.ora) file which at least saves layers.
Pixlab seems to have hit on at least a partial solution. I moved the images to desktop. All the files seem to be workable now- EXCEPT the one that caused all the trouble in the first place.
I'm taking that as a win (for now) and continuing on. The "problem page" still affected was nearly done. I may still be able to figure something out eventually. If not, the worst case scenario is that I may need to eventually start that page over from scratch.
In any case, thanks for all the help. Hopefully, there will be smoother sailing ahead.
