Do you have the tool options window showing ? Many new users try and hide it for some reason.
You are most of the way there. Select the layers in the layer dock using ctrl-click.
Select the Move tool. In the Tools options click on Move the selected layers and make sure you are on the layer mode.

Now you can click in the canvas on one of the selected layers, and move using the cursor keys, shift moves in steps.

Hmmm, what are "said layers" if not "which layers are selected in the dialogue"?

Thank you for the detailed explanation, it is appreciated. The option window was activated, but I didn't have the reflex to look there for my answer...! I see now that holding down Shift works as well, instead of activating it from the menu. This will work, just needs a bit of readjusting

Yeah, I might not have been very clear there!! I meant that it moves the list selection in the layer panel instead of the layers themselves.
