It isn't that GIMP doesn't have the fonts, it is your system that doesn't have them. I have a font directory in my home directory, where i keep all my fonts. I don't ever install fonts into my system,as it would bog down the system loading 14,000 plus font into a file window for every application, when you want to switch fonts. when add a program like a graphic editor or dtp i check if it has an option to add an additional path for fonts on the system. That way moving to a new system i can easily add this directory of fonts and have less of an issue with old documents.
