When you use File > Open what files types do you see in the filter at the bottom of the file selection dialog?

I can not find png in that list. It does not show a preview when selecting a png file either

In your Gimp installation tree, you should have a `lib/gimp/3.0/plug-ins/file-png/file-png.exe? Is it there?

I also have Gimp on my laptop. I tried to copy this "file-png.exe" into that directory  but it doesn't work.

RE: Unknown file type - Papa Mouse - 05-01-2025

So here's the killer ...

Moved this folder "file-png” to somewhere else (Did not deleted it)
Created new folder “file-png”
Copied file-png.exe - from my laptop Gimp - to this new folder and then there was this security warning. (see image) I clicked on “Blijf Bloodgested” (Ignore)
Also copied “.debug” folder with its content back into the new “file-png”

Started Gimp and … OMG … all works fine.  Smile

According to - whatever security guard on my windows 11 – “file-png.exe” is corrupted and it deletes it over and over again.

Do you guys add malware to Gimp ??????  Angry

Very likely a false positive. Note that instead of adding a random .EXE, you could perhaps have un-quarantined the original one.

So you've helped me ones more. Without you I wouldn't have found it. Thank you.

I have seen similar reports around. I put the Windows Gimp 3.0.2-1 file-png.exe  ( file size 247296 )  up to virus total where it looks like it has been scanned just recently 72 AV's and no virus. A false positive.

There also seems problems with Gimp 3.0.2 installed from Windows Store, best to get the installer from gimp.org which is now Gimp 3.0.2-1  I have it installed in a Win11 and it works ok

I was wondering about RAV Did it come with Hitfilm when you installed that ? It might be an idea to remove it. I came across this https://softwarekeep.com/blogs/what-is/what-is-rav-antivirus-and-how-to-remove-it which says it it no longer supported.

I have removed it ... thank you for the reply and that link. I thought it was part of Windows 11 I recently upgraded to. It was pretty annoying with it popups telling me that my computer was infected. To clear it I had to buy it.

Hitfilm probably was the Trojan horse. I have removed Hitfilm too. It disappeared – among some other programs - of my computer upgrading to W11. Hitfilm cease to exist and I was desperate to have it back so I kept searching and finally found a download. My bad I guess.

You guys should have a word with RAV.

Thank you.
