RawTherapy to Gimp - doiphoto - 05-10-2025

Hi, I am trying to get the RawTherapy plugin for importing Canon CR2 raw files into Gimp working but am struggling. I have installed RawTherapy successfully but when I try to open a CR2 file from Gimp I get the error:

There is no RAW loader installed to open 'Raw Canon' files.
GIMP currently supports these RAW loaders:
- darktable (http://www.darktable.org/), at least 1.7
- RawTherapee (http://rawtherapee.com/), at least 5.2
Please install one of them in order to load RAW files.

I am on Ubuntu 24.04.2

I believe I need to install RawTherapy into the "Plugins" folder but cannot locate it's path.

Can any help me with this?

First thing: No need to install any RawTherapee "anything" into the plug-ins folder. The support is already in the Gimp system files.
..then..
What type of Gimp 3.0 and Rawtherpee (RT) have you installed.  Unfortunately 'buntu tends to install a SNAP version or you might have installed a Flatpak or even an appimage. These are "sandboxed" and prevent the plugin working.

Since you are using 'buntu 24.04 you can install a regular version for each from an ubuntu PPA

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntuhandbook1/+archive/ubuntu/gimp-3
and
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntuhandbook1/+archive/ubuntu/rawtherapee

How to add these PPA's to the repos is on the page.

An example using a lumix .rw2 file. Open in Gimp which sends it to RT . Close RT (wait-a-bit) and it opens in Gimp.  40 second demo: https://i.imgur.com/2ZFcUAn.mp4

Other things to consider, Cut out the Gimp bit. Open in RT and export as a 32 bit tiff - open that in Gimp.
Canon CR2 files ? I have seen reports about problems with the latest version.

That is starting to make some sense because I have had it wrking previously. I will uninstall Gimp/RT and use the launchpad versions and post how it goes. Thanks!

Hi sorry to sound like a dummy. I have added those two repositories now but where do I actually download the programs? I am not experienced with launchpad.

RE: RawTherapy to Gimp - doiphoto - 05-12-2025

If anyone else comes across this issue, I have found so much conflicting information on this, I have decided to simply open the CR2 files in RawTherapy, save as Tiffs and then open them in in Gimp.

That is probably the best way, no a lot of time/workflow saved using the Gimp plugin.

---in case any other ubuntu user has the same problem ---

The instructions are on the PPA pages, after adding the PPA to to the repo list
In a terminal
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/gimp-3
sudo apt update

but then up to the user to install:
sudo apt install gimp

This is also what I do. The tools in the demosaicing app are better suited for photography and I do most of the editing/grading in the app. Gimp is OK for for local edits.

As I use Darktable I can also directly export to Gimp 32-bit FP format.

Sounds very plausible, thanks for the clarification.. I had exactly the same problem with the Snap version of GIMP, plugin communication was completely blocked. Since I installed both via the PPA, everything's been working flawlessly. I would recommend it to anyone who works with RAW files..
