cannot find instructions for converting .svg to .ggr - Logansfury - 07-13-2025
Hello,
Some time ago, I found an inkscape file of metal graidents. I used boxySVG on linux to separate them into individual .svg files, then, somehow, I got all these .svg files converted in GIMP 2.10 into .ggr files.
I have been all over the net for hours, I cannot find the instructions I followed to convert these .svg files. Can anyone please help?

You can load the image in Gimp, then create a path across the gradient, and use one of the several "sample-gradient-along-path" scripts that exists in 2.10. Don't remember if any of these has been converted to Gimp3.
A more hardcore method is to edit the SVG file (which is a text file....), spot the gradient definition (a bunch of numbers) and create a GGR from that (also a text file with a bunch of numbers).

Gimp 2.10 or Gimp 3 A couple of ways but just one-at-a-time
1) Right click on a gradient, duplicate it and Gimp makes a copy in ggr format. You might have to do a bit of text editing for a better name. Showing the file(s) in the background.

2) Open the Palettes dock, right click and import a new palette from the image. Right click on the new palette and select palette to gradient. This gives a gradient with the number of colours that you previously set in the new palette.

Edit: for Gimp 2.10 - If you can get the gimp-gmic-qt plugin working that has a gradient from image filter.

This is Gimp 2.10 only, a very old RobA script,
Draw your gradient into a canvas. Make a path to sample colours. The script is right-click in the gradients dock near the bottom. It is old so if you use it more than once in the same session it can pop-under the Gimp window (just saying).
Run it. Fill in the number of samples value and name of the new gradient. Ok it, then refresh the gradients for it to show in the gradients dock.
