help with shine/gloss effect - tempy - 07-23-2025 i am very new to gimp i was wondering if there are any filters that make a gloss shine effect or any plugins that would give me this effect [attachment=13732][attachment=13731] RE: help with shine/gloss effect - Ofnuts - 07-23-2025 Filters > Light and shadow > Lighting effects. But you have to provide a bump map because the plugin cannot guess the third dimension, which is necessary to create proper reflections. RE: help with shine/gloss effect - tempy - 07-23-2025 [attachment=13735][attachment=13736]below is what i am trying to make glossy to add to the hand. at the moment i use a tiny bit of shine to the right of the nail but am wanting something more glossy. i tried making a bump map but it was just plain with a outline ? RE: help with shine/gloss effect - sallyanne - 07-24-2025 try also different layer modes and gradients
Using your template - Fuzzy selected then inverted the transparent area to just select the nail. I took the red back to white. Added a transparent layer and with a black to white gradient did a linear stroke across the nail at the widest place. Taking the gradient out as far as possible or to your satisfaction.
I then copied it a couple times using multiply layer mode. I blurred the bottom layer before applying lighting effects - bump map.
If you haven't already merged your layers, copy one of the black and white layers and put at the bottom of the layer stack. Now you can safely merge them all and use colorise to get the colour you want or use another gradient.
Last of all add some contrast and that will make your white stand out more.

RE: help with shine/gloss effect - denzjos - 07-24-2025 I tried this: blurring the white a bit and adding a subtle reflection. [attachment=13737] RE: help with shine/gloss effect - rich2005 - 07-24-2025 @tempy You could try the gimp_gmic_qt plugin, http://www.gmic.eu There are Win installers for both Gimp 2.10 and Gimp 3 Using the gmic Lights & Shadows section -> Illuminate 2D shape [attachment=13739] Makes a semi-transparent overlay to give a depth/light effect. or That is illuminate mode. There is another mode which will make a bump map for you to apply manually. RE: help with shine/gloss effect - sallyanne - 07-25-2025 You could also try map to cylinder (under filter - map) and play with the lighting sliders [attachment=13745] Tried again with using a gradient first RE: help with shine/gloss effect - sallyanne - 07-25-2025 [attachment=13746] Tried again without using a gradient first |
