Vector Layers - Coming Soon - rich2005 - 08-18-2025

In the latest Gimp 3.1.3 (appimage) are vector layers, so they will be in Gimp 3.2 when it comes along.

You can make your own path and apply a fill and stroke which remains editable. You can apply transformations - just remember to work in paths mode.

Path Tool Options looks like this:

rich2005: Thanks for trying it out! We're hoping to get a lot of feedback on UX/UI after 3.1.4 comes out, so we can make a polished version of vector layers for stable 3.2.

I wanted to ask - why did you say you needed to be in path mode to transform? At least from my tests, it's possible to transform vector layers when the transform tool is in layer mode as well.

It is just me  Wink   Say, Unified transform in layer mode looks a bit odd, but it does correct when applied.

The UI could be a little neater, not everyone uses a 4k display.

(same applies to the align & distribute tool, the extents icon, again just me and my setup)

Quick thoughts:
  • It is not clear in the Layers list that the layer is attached to a path. Should we have something like the Text layer icon (perhaps something like the path tools  icon? and come to think of it, shouldn't the text tool icon and the text layer thumbnail be the same image? and  why are ? Or at least something in the name, like Path: {path name}? Or even have the names linked (ie, renaming the path automatically renames the layer)
  • Attaching the path to a layer, selecting both a non-Path layer and the path layer and applying a transform to both is a workable way to apply the same transform  to both the layer and the path (something which disappeared with the removal of chain links in Gimp3). But it doesn't work the other way:  applying a transform to a path to have it applied to a layer, which was a useful trick (because the transform tool handles is close to the hull of the path, where the action goes, while in the layer they are on the corners, which can be far from the actual target).
  • From the layer it should be possible to select the path in the Paths list (editing the path isn't the only thing we can want to do with it)
  • If I try to paint on a path layer, Gimp squeals and wants me to explicitly rasterize it first. But for a text layer Gimp will happily throw away the text information and automatically rasterize the layer. And IMHO there is much more info thrown away with the text layer than with the path layer (the path is still around...)
  • IMHO the Discard vector information menu item should be Discard path information. There was obviously a push in Gimp3 to avoid Vectors in favor of Path and maybe we should pursue this.
  • If we have vectors layers, do we still need vectors?
  • When I have two paths I can create a vector layer for the first but when I try to create a layer for the second one, instead I get a empty path and a layer (both called Vector layer)
Enough for tonight...
