Import from CorelDraw a file with its objects - Herve - 03-12-2018

Hi everybody

I'm a new Gimp user, so maybe my question is stupid ... Sorry about it if so  Confused

I have a CorelDraw .cdr file and I would like to import it in Gimp. I also have CorelDraw software (free test edition) so I can export this file in another format if needed. I would like to import the file (more exactly its objects) into Gimp, so I could continue using Gimp to modify the logo. But it seems Gimp can't read .cdr files.

Please could you tell me which filetype I should use to export it from CorelDraw and then import it into Gimp ? Of course, I want to keep most informations about the CorelDraw "objects" (~ like objects and/or layers in Gimp)

If needed, here are the whole list of filetypes that can be used or export with Corel :

Thanks a lot for your help !  Smile

Corel Draw is a vector editor. Gimp is a bitmap editor. So no chance of retaining the objects.

Inkscape is a vector editor. Try using that. It uses svg files. svg is in the list you provided.

There is an Inkscape help forum here:

I did my first steps in computergraphics with Corel Draw 5 in 2005 Smile

If i remember correctly pdf has layers. That might work as a means to import into Gimp (havent tried).

There is no such thing in Gimp as an object. Gimp is a raster (bitmap) editor.

You will be better off using Inkscape. Certainly the linux Inkscape version opens (at least some) .cdr vector files (1)

CorelDraw should export as an SVG. Inkscape would open that and so will Gimp.(2)

SVG files imported into Gimp lose their vector properties and become bitmaps, but you do have a choice right at the beginning to set an image size.(3) see: https://i.imgur.com/clKkihS.jpg

Common Gimp formats from ofnuts: https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/ImageFormats/

Lots more than those if you look in the Open/Export dialogs.

Your best bet could be the "Draw" component of LibreOffice which seems to open CDR files just fine.
