Help on layer mask - MrGimp - 07-01-2018

Hi - I'd like some help on understanding layer masks.

I want to blend an image that has white clothing on one edge into a white background so there is a seamless transition (the whites are not quite the same, leaving a sharp edge.

I get the effect I want from using layer mask and the graduation tool, but I feel I am missing a step as the effect doesn't "stick" - i.e. it goes back to the original as soon as I move on.

Can anyone help?

Thanks
MrGimp

I was only able to reproduce this with a layer that had no alpha channel when i applied the layer mask.
If this is your problem then add an alpha channel to the layer.

Thanks for the suggestion. I do have an alpha channel added, but it doesn't stick. I feel like I should do something like click ok to make it work, but I don't see how to.

Generally in Gimp 2.10 gradient tool, hitting the enter key or selecting another tool will fix it in place. Esc or closing the dialogue window cancels.

Might be that you clicked on some other window/dialogue and lost focus in the Gimp window.

Not sure what you are doing without your image but as a guess.

Shirt on top layer with layer mask. Made a feathered selection to constrain the gradient. Click in the layer mask to make it active. Start gradient tool. https://i.imgur.com/ZiTUcNB.jpg Note the layer mask shows no change until the gradient is fixed.

Hit enter to fix gradient. The layer mask now shows the result. https://i.imgur.com/PiyPZdV.jpg

With the selection off. https://i.imgur.com/prRcEwH.jpg

Is it something like that you want?
