Gimp 2.10.6 on Win7 export problems - Nathan Adler - 09-19-2018

Hi,

I've recently had to rebuild my system but previously was able to upload exported GIMP PDFs to Redbubble with transparent layers with no problems however  now it won't accept them.

It's not the export feature because thw website accepts JPGs & so it must be something to do with the way it exports PDFs. I don't think the issue is with Redbubble because it accepted PDFs from my other art package AND PDFs with a transparent layer from my previous version of GIMP (don't know what that version was!)

Can anybody help - I might be missing something but I don't think so.

BTW the previous GIMP version was installed in November last year (I think) and just had floating windows rather than the desktop style it is with 2.10.6.

Thanks for any thoughts. Smile

Ah, the previous version was 2.8. I suppose I could download & use that. I mean Gimp isn't my main art program so it isn't a disaster if I have to run an older version but it does seem like a bug.

The same image run through Gimp 2.8.22 (Win 7) and Gimp 2.10.6 and the only visible difference in the Gimp export PDF is the options Apply layer masks/Convert bitmaps/Omit hidden are off in Gimp 2.8 and on in Gimp 2.10 As far as I know this is the default state. First thing I would try is un-ticking those options in Gimp 2.10 "just-in-case" and try an upload as a test.

Same image out of each, Gimp 2.8 file size is a tiny bit smaller, A quick test and that is those on/off options in play.

The main difference are the versions of poppler and cairo used 1.14 vs 1.15 It could be a bug in either of those. Not much you can do about that. Both Gimps make PDF 1.5 which supports transparency.

last version of Gimp 2.8

Edit: Gimp 2.8 single window mode is bottom of the Gimp Windows menu.

Thanks for that, I'll try looking at those options. Smile

Hmm, doon't see those options in the export feature. Are they elsewhere in settings?

There is a default colour setting in the export policies in settings. Do you mean this?

These, in Gimp 2.10 ticked, not ticked in Gimp 2.8 Try unticking, slim chance that it makes a difference

Hmm... that isnt what my copy of GIMP displays.

I've got a screenshot but how do you display here. Is it by Flickr?

Sorry not a thumbnail but you should get the idea, it's quite different to what you are displaying. (Also my program skin is dark but yours is light - could do with knowing how to change that.)

RE: Gimp 2.10.6 on Win7 export problems - rich2005 - 09-19-2018

That is exporting as a PNG, that is the default for a new export.

If you want a PDF, just change the file extention from .png to .pdf Gimp will sort out the correct export dialogue depending on the extension (.jpg / .tif / ....etc)

Edit: changing the Gimp 2.10 theme is in Edit -> Preferences -> Theme and one in there for the icons as well.

OH my lord.... I'm so sorry. :o

I meant PNG and not PDF throughout. God what a plonker I now feel.

The problem is real however.

(BTW I'v now changed the theme so made that clear at least.)

Again Just going back to a comparison of default export settings. Your site must be a bit picky Wink

I would stick with the defaults and have background colour ticked, but then it be something like the metadata settings. Try turning all of those off, exif, thumbnail.

I'll certainly try that - thanks for your help! Smile
