Previewing Layer Effects - hellousers - 11-22-2018

Hello everyone,

I came across this site: https://templatetoaster.com/tutorials/gi...ts-plugin/
which seems to suggest that by loading layerfx.2.8.py into my plugins folder, as a Windows user, I would gain the option of previewing my effects.  I followed the instructions, but it didn't work. Can anyone tell me if this is valid please?

Thank you.

These plugins do not provide a preview. You can use it to render the effect, it makes new layers, if you do not like the effect, ctrl-z undo or keep the new layer(s) and turn visibility off.

That version layerfx.2.8.py does not work correctly in Gimp 2.10

Use the previous version layerfx.py From an earlier forum post you can get it here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/i81ouhzmefv77wi/layerfx.scm?dl=0

These plug-ins are old and not supported. There are usually better options depending on what you want to do. Drop shadow is incorporated into Gimp.

The preview button works, however the Bevel option has the habit to sometimes empty the history tab when you use the Preview and then hit 'Cancel'.
What i do is use the Preview, adjust the options until i get something that looks good, then press 'Okay', without unchecking Preview.

As far as my experience goes, its only the Bevel which does this.

The problem with the layerfx 2.8 version is that it creates a layergroup for Shadow and Highlight which compromises the layermode. This is why the previous version (layerfx.py) is the better one.

The scm version of layerfx generates effects like Bevel & Emboss with a layermask and has no preview.

And all of the above applies for Gimp 2.8. Havent tried it in 2.10.

Yas LayerFx.py in Gimp 2.10 works the best. If you have the original Gimp version from gimp.org, the only minor problem is that if you "Right click" on the filter "Color Picker" it will give you an error. Here is a sample:"

Now, to make it work, you have to: Change the Foreground color first, then Left click on the Color picker and choose from the options given. Once the color change, you can use the filter normally.

If you have Partha's Gimp version from https://www.partha.com/, the Layerfx.py work as it suppose to. That the version I use. I uploaded the layerfx.py I hope this help.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer my questions.

RE: Previewing Layer Effects - Espermaschine - 11-24-2018

I just remembered: perhaps the layerfx 2.8 version isnt so bad, now that we have the 'See through' layermode.

The problem with the automatically generated layergroups was that in Gimp 2.8 layermodes inside a group werent active, but with the new functionality in 2.10 this has changed.

EDIT: this works fine for the Bevel & Emboss, but if you want to apply another effect, the plug-in puts the Bevel group inside another group for the next effect  Dodgy
