Preserving EXIF - Turn2Linux - 03-15-2019

I recently joined the GIMP community, after years of Paint.net.

Somehow the EXIF of my photos is not preserved either when importing my JPG or exporting them
(Preference> Import/Export > checked the preserve EXIF)

I know there was a problem for Pentax users, but I use Sony and have the same problem.

Any help will be appreciated.

Without more information, all exif gone or part missing ? , difficult to help. Certainly on my Gimp 2.10.8 kubuntu 16.04 flatpak, the exif is mostly there. Some fields are gone, extra fields added but nothing critical.

Screenshot of edited jpeg exif data. https://i.imgur.com/j7nVBWc.jpg - it is still there.

Since you are using Ubuntu Budgie (based ubuntu 18.04?) the default Gimp is 2.8.22 - is that correct? Your Gimp 2.10.8 comes from the PPA - is that correct?

Best guess.
Do you have libexiv2 installed? You should be looking for the file libexiv2.so.14
Look for something like this: https://i.imgur.com/bQx3QJU.jpg

I do not have exactly your setup to compare, looking at dependencies it might pull in libgexiv, which is a gnome version.
However, there are plenty reports of exif problems, so it is "just a guess".

Hi rich2005,

Win10 x64 ver of GIMP 2.10.8 || Thanks to you I'm able now to freely move to the Ubuntu Budgie x64 (18.04 based) - which I really like (just have to "take the plunge").

However, concerning the Win10 ver. - - the EXIF critical parameters: ISO, F#, SS, AF, FL of lens, are gone completely. Even the ID of the Camera as Sony 99ii or 77ii is stripped. Just basically nothing there.

I had to seek my original photos to recover the EXIF.

I would ask the question on https://discuss.pixls.us/ where there are plenty of Windows using photographers. It might be that Gimp is not the best application to use.

I realise that it's not of that much help to you but I am running W7 with GIMP 2.10.8 and, so far as I can see, all of the EXIF data that is of interest to me is preserved (camera model, exposure, aperture etc etc)

So it might be a W10 specific problem (I think that this is unlikely) but it's not down to GIMP 2.10.8 (unless it behaves differently on W10 to W7).

I am using GIMP 2.10.8 64-bit Standard Edition Portable from Partha's site https://www.partha.com/

(you could install this alongside the version you have now (it won't interfere with your current installation) if you wanted to try it. Run this version of GIMP by using portgimp-2.10.8-std.exe in the installed folder)

Thanks rich2005,
Will explore.
Just realized I have to find out if the same happens on my laptop (already Ubuntu Budgie x64/ GIMP 2.10.8, where your zipped wavelet-denoise is functioning as intended), because ultimately - this is the direction I'm going. Just verifying that I'm not going to regret leaving Microsoft.
