How do you make a ring thinner? - Hoot - 05-20-2019

Greetings.

Seems like a basic function and run into it a lot but haven't found a tutorial yet. Basically, I want to make a ringed object thinner so it doesn't lose its size, just needs to be narrower. Is there a way to do this?

Not such a basic function. In fact pretty hard to do because you want something like a "radial scaling". Easiness would depend a lot on the actual ring and its background. Have you got a sample image?

Yes, this is the ring I'm talking about, transparent background.[Image: goldinterweave.png?w=775]

  • Make sure the image is square and the ring is centered in it (for this image, just crop the top)
  • Filters>Distorts>Polar coordinates, and untick the "To Polar". This will transform your ring into a rectangle at the bottom
  • Select the resulting rectangle (no need ot be too accurate), and scale it down vertically using the Scale tool
  • Commit/Anchor the transform (Ctr-H) and remove the selection Select>None
  • Filters>Distorts>Polar coordinates again, and tick the "To Polar".
