grey box - insulin junky - 08-02-2019

I have a grey box with the text 'Tool Options' at the top left of my screen which is preventing me from using the main menu. i.e. I can't get to the 'save as' function on my mac. (I'm trying to save as a png..)

insulin junkie, not sure of everything that might be going on with your set-up, but, just to clarify one thing, in GIMP you cannot "SAVE AS" a PNG.  SAVE and SAVE AS functions are only for GIMP-specific filetypes.  You have to use EXPORT [Ctrl+E] or EXPORT AS [Shift+Ctrl+E] to "save" your work as non-GIMP filetypes.

As one newbie to another, for good or ill, GIMP is a unique application, very possibly not like any image application you've used before, and, unfortunately, what you may have already learned elsewhere just doesn't immediately or intuitively remap into GIMP's procedures, language, and workflows.  It is well-worth learning but that won't happen overnight.

Could you provide a screenprint?

Are you using single window mode (the default)? Windows > Single-Window Mode

Tool Options is normally docked below the Tool Box. Is your Tool Options a floating window? Can you drag it out of the way to get to your main menu?

If it is a floating window you can dock it by dragging on the tab. (Not the window title bar, the tab within the window)

OSX bug see: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/2731

There is a possible workaround near the end of that thread. Not many (none) OSX users around here to confirm one-way-or-another.

Edit
OSX users (none) still valid Wink but I do have a Virtual Mac that I can drag out to give a try. Dumped the dark theme and a few tabs to make it easier to see. I think a solution might be to lock the tool options tab.
