Replicating A Paint Brush Like Effect using Gimp brushes - njrk97 - 10-20-2019

Im currently doing some work on a 3D model, for some texture work on the wooden puppet i wanted to create a texture that makes its face paint look like it was physically painted by someone using a paint brush, including the streaks and build up of paints that can occur.

IE like these

I have looked into brushes but the issues with those seems to be that the brushes are just a PNG of a brush stroke of my images above, and not something i can dynamically paint with to fit a shape.

So im wondering if there is anyway to recreate, or create a more dynamic brush that can create this type of effect when i paint with it?

You will not get that straight off in Gimp. Some PS 'brushes' have  actions which might give that effect.

Best I can suggest is paint your image, then bump map with a pattern. A lot of work to do that. This a quickie.

There are/were painting applications for 3D, one of them was DeepPaint. Last time I looked at it was 15 year ago. A quick search & might still work see: http://www.photo-freeware.net/download/action/show/Item/deep-paint/

Yeah i suspected it may be more complicated then simply having a paintbrush that replicates a real paintbrush (ironically). I have a old plugin myself to do normal maps in gimps, so my intention was always to normal map it. Ill try that pattern strategy but im not sure how well it will work. I swear though photoshop had some feature that let you replicate a paint brush with it.

Paint simulation :
1/ draw an irrigular wide line in color
2/ use the QMicQT plugin 'Brushify'
3/ cage transform the result
4/ make a bump map
if not satisfied:
5/ use brighten/contrast to optimise
6/ cage transform more

The idea making Gimp brushes that look like real brushes, very nice
Thanks denzjos.
