Keyboard key colour change - meetdilip - 12-08-2019

I have 2 questions

1. How to make a specific key in a keyboard photo of a specific colour ?

ie, all the keys are white.

2. Is there any easy way to change the key colour in the image below

All sorts of ways, but whatever you use you will probably need a good selection of the key, so do a bit of research on that topic.

The keys are not all white, they change colour across the image, then there is the shading so a straight fill is out.

One way, make your selection then 'Colors -> Component -> Channel Mixer` and adjust the green sliders to get a match.

Easy:
  • Make a selection on the button, including its sides and base (ie, not just the top)  (I used the Path tool)
  • Add a layer,
  • Set to "Multiply" mode,
  • Bucket fill the selection.

However, the devil is in the details. Notice how the green button is surrounded by a green reflection, while our button is surrounded by a white reflection. So we have to add that reflection too:
  • Save the selection on the button (Select>Save to channel) (unless you have a path...)
  • Make a selection which encompasses the reflection
  • Select>Feather (I used 10px)
  • Subtract the inital selection from it (Right click saved channel and 'Subtract from selection`)
  • Add a layer under the layer you added for the button color, set to multiply
  • Bucket fill the selection with the button color
  • Reduce opacity (to around 40%)

If you want to replace a saturated color use Colors>Map>Rotate colors. Pitfall, in the to circle, the range shouldbe wide enough to include colors of the reflections (in particular on the side of the return key, which would other wise keep a green tint. No need for a selection here but if there are other keys of similar color you may want to exclude them with a selection (while keeping the reflections of the key you are changing).

Thanks @rich2005 and  @Ofnuts

I want to learn this since some time. I tried both methods roughly. Here are the results

'Colors -> Component -> Channel Mixerand 'Colors -> Component -> Channel Mixer does not work on black key.

Add a layer > Multiply > Bucket fill gives this

This is nothing important. I give it a try when I got the image and the methods I learned didn't work. So just updating here Smile

Black is a whole other matter... But not a very good thing to start with, since darkness makes a lot of useful features disappear. For instance in your example the edges of the top of the keys are not visible. If you use a lighter color they should be so, but they won't magically come back... Not speaking of shadows...

You are soon learning that every image is different and has to be considered on its own.

A couple of possibilities

Fill a selection on a transparent layer and go through the layer modes to see how they interact (all good practice for you). LCH color might work, although it gives the white characters a pink tinge. https://i.imgur.com/QVVPiDV.jpg

A GEGL tool `Tools -> GEGL Operation -> Color Warp. Careful selection of top surface and edge and apply suitable colours to each. https://i.imgur.com/6xX7dPo.jpg

I managed to use Tools > GEGL > ColorWrap successfully. I tried the layer and fill method, my attempts were not very close as GEGL.

But how do you pick the red colour through the colour picker? I had to use another layer merged with required colours to this layer. So I had to work with a pretty zoomed out image.

Click in the 'to' area and that brings up the usual color selector dialogue. https://i.imgur.com/QrRKqj6.jpg
