Night mode - meetdilip - 01-19-2020
Hope you people remember how MacOS had 2 wallpapers, one for the day and other for the night. I was thinking whether both are the same. ie, they Photoshop ed the original image as the night wallpaper.
I was trying to learn how to make a day time image look dark as in the night. I tried Colour > curve and adding a layer with black colour ( opacity 50 ). While it seems ok, I am not happy with the result. How do we do that the right way ? Thanks.
PS : I am attaching a sample wallpaper I was working on.

- make a new layer with color bleu (a little purple)
- layer mode on the blue layer : "Darken only"
- play with the opacity

Looked up an example here: http://osxdaily.com/2019/06/06/get-macos-catalina-default-wallpapers/ and that is very dark.
As an alternative to previous solution, and a bit of fun messing with gmic filters, there is in the colour section color presets & a lot of color-lookup-tables (CLUT). Note these get downloaded and stored, one time only as required (or maybe not with the latest gmic's might already be included)
All different sorts, not many very dark but a couple of examples: https://i.imgur.com/KWhkx2O.jpg https://i.imgur.com/hlA38lG.jpg those are default but there are sliders to adjust if required.

In those, they have replaced the sky. The clouds are different and there are stars in the sky. Perhaps it is not Photoshop at all.
Thanks for the tips. I am not sure whether I have Gmic. I will check.
Looks like Mac OS dark uses #202c44 as mask

In the above image, I am able to influence the sky. But unable to change the colour of sand to dark. I tried " darken only " in both paint bucket and layer opacity. The sand is still somewhat brighter shade of yellow.
PS : GMIC worked. Not exactly the way dark mode is.

Finally, got it right. Had to use lasso tool and make the images into 2 layers. One for sky and another for sand. Then used the Colorize tool and used the dark blue hex code I posted before. Some tweaking got most of it right. I am working on making sky a bit more darker ( the same way ).
Any idea how to add stars ? White dots will be enough, but is there any drag and drop pattern or similar for stars ? Thanks.

For stars
New layer > fill it with night colour > add noise using " filter " > blur the layer using Gaussian blur > add the layer to the image.

I found a plugin from Diego for add weather conditions on a photo but in gimp 2.10.14 (windows 10) there is an error but the result is ok.

Note: if someone wants to use the option "Rainy" or "Snowy", there are the respective prerequisites "RenderRain" and "RenderSnow".

I saw your post on GC.com There have been over the years the occasional Gimp script to add 'stars' to an image. Most do not work correctly with Gimp 2.10 but the attached is not too bad.
I liked your sky gradient, got the 'air glow' with the horizon.
Some things to look into in the future.
1. Use of layer masks to separate parts of an image.
2. You asked about layer modes, drop down list for combining a layer with the layer(s) underneath. Just experiment
The starry-sky script for you to play with. The usual unzip / pop in scripts folder
