Help with paintbrush tool - david.smith.ii@gmail.com - 05-31-2017

I went back to work on a project and the paintbrush won't paint.

Yes, I'm selecting the layer, selection is set to none (or all - same result) and yes, I checked 20 other things that have been documented in answer to this question from others.

I select the layer, but when I click on the image with the paintbrush, the focus on the layer is lost. Does that shed any light on the issue?

The previous thing I did on this image was adding some text. Could I somehow be locked into text selection even though I said select none?

Thanks.

Welcome to gimp-forum.net

You will need to give more specific information other than paintbrush won't paint

Can you take a screenshot showing as much as possible and post it. Layers, tool options, brushes something like this:

[attachment=572]

Quote:...I select the layer, but when I click on the image with the paintbrush, the focus on the layer is lost...

What exactly do you mean by focus on the layer is lost? Changes to a different layer or ...what?

Checked 20 things. The most common are a tiny active selection. Make sure you use Select -> None and not select all. A clipboard brush with nothing in it or as a long shot, pixel lock for that layer.

Lost focus: I click the layer and it's highlighted. As soon as I click the paintbrush on the canvas, the layer becomes un-highlighted. Then nothing is highlighted.

How do I detect/fix the empty clipboard thing?

Pixel lock is the only thing I haven't heard of before. How do I detect/fix?

I'll post a screen shot as soon as I can figure out how. I don't have anywhere to host a photo atm.

1) ?

2) Edit>Preferences>Toolbpox and select "Show active brush, pattern, and gradient" this will add this indicator [attachment=573] to your toolbox, with which you can quickly determine if there is a usable brush:

3) See the "lock" line at the top of your Layers list (paintbrush icon, circled in red in Rich's screenshot above)

4) You can attach pictiures here directly, see https://www.gimp-forum.net/misc.php?action=help&hid=11

Ah ha. It was the clipboard thing. I have a puppy who likes to climb up on my desk and play on the keyboard. I bet she did it, lol.

Thanks. all.
