Animation Tools for Gimp - Retrorage - 06-06-2020

Hey I made some scripts and tools for making frame animations on Gimp I hope they are useful, please let me know if there are any issues or things you might also want.

List :
Layer group duplication
Onion skin effect
Set visible or Opacity of all layers
Create a layer group with X amount of frames (lower than 60)

Here's a video tutorial on using them : https://youtu.be/g1zaQ89nTQU

You can download the files here : https://drive.google.com/file/d/15peRPYC3_wXpwEMgBIKA9h3Z_i3gwB26/view?usp=sharing

Always willing to test drive something new. First, why a rar archive? Ok for me but Windows users already have zip support, not a big file anyway, why not use zip.

The scripts. Windows or linux (which is what I use) are ok, onion-skin.scm a bit temperamental when it comes to layer names and visible-set.scm, well shift-click also toggles visibility.

The executable. Same as most, I never RTFM, I assumed, wrongly that 'Exporting Layered Gifs.exe is a Gimp plugin. Not so, it is standalone but generates errors here. see: https://i.imgur.com/TwtqMSC.jpg I suggest you include those in your archive ( I see the executables are 32 bit as well).

The next bit is just comment on the video.
22 minutes duration, a lot of users will go too long, click-off. (I did download it so I could scroll through)
Black theme and symbolic icons are not easy viewing. Active layers not easy to see, active tool not always obvious, Not wonderful.
Your video, there is an HD (1080p) version but default is 1280x720 The youtube scale down has left it a bit fuzzy. Not really necessary to see your desktop icons, maybe you can capture a smaller area.
15 minutes in, opens a command console for running the ....exe Almost impossible to see, try black text on white and bump the text size up.
Audio, very weak not easy to hear even with volume maxed out. I have come across this before with Windows video, .acc audio is not wonderful. What you can do is de-mux the video / audio, increase the gain on the audio, and re-mux . mp3 audio is fine for youtube. This a comparison original on left, 'normalised' on right. https://i.imgur.com/pnJiF5W.jpg

To complement the video, and for people like me who just dive in, a short text file ( a read.me) with script / plugin explanations in the archive goes a long way.

Also, consider that a good half of your users(*) are not native English speakers. They can likely read English, but a voice-only video is hardly usable.

(*) download stats of my own scripts from sourceforge

My fault, he took my comments to heart.

I did download the video, so as a temporary measure until a new version appears, here is the original

EDIT: gone see the revised version post #8

I will remove this sometime in the future.

The low resolution and the length of the video (22:34 min) in part made me limit myself to watching about 5 or 6 minutes of the video. Still I saw enough to better understand what this post is about.

Rich2005 thanks for making the video available!  Shy
