You will have to give more information. How do you want to divide a (background) layer ?

Divide by keeping the layer size and introducing gaps
Divide by splitting the layer up into separate sub-layers
Divide by splitting up, moving apart to make a larger image
or
what....?

I want to divide by keeping layer size and introducing black lines that seperate it

I want to divide by keeping layer size and introducing black lines that seperate it

Filters>Render>Pattern>Grid, setting the horizontal thickness to 0 (on a separate layer so that you can change your mind)
