Gimp Installation - rich2005 - 10-21-2016

A set of short videos about installing and setting up Gimp in Windows 10
Duration 3 to 6 minutes each (no 30 minute Epics here)

Installing Gimp for the first time.

Initial set-up

Adding resources, brushes, fonts, a new theme

Installing local help

Moving tabs and docks
Did you look at the second video Initial set-up for Gimp in single window mode? That is the best way for new users.

However, changing the look of the interface is possible, this gives examples for re-arranging the parts of the single window. About 6 minutes duration.

This for those who do not like youtube videos, otherwise look at no. 2 in previous post.

This is a very often asked question from new Gimp users.

Quote:How do I re-dock the tool options dialogue in the toolbox.  So far, the only way I can get it to dock is to reinstall gimp, which doesn't take more than a few minutes, but there has to be a better way.

There certainly is a better way. Reinstalling Gimp vary rarely solves anything. Most of the Gimp settings are stored in The user Gimp 2.8 profile, which for Windows users usually C:\Users\your-name\.gimp-2.8\

Instead of re-installing

1. Windows -> Dockable Dialogues -> Tool Options will open the tool options as another tab alongside layers etc.

2. Click and Drag that tab into the area designated "You can drop dockable dialogues here"

3. Why does this happen and how to stop it happening again? Open Edit -> Preferences -> Window Management By default Window Positions -> Save window positions on exit is enabled
Get Gimp looking the way you want
Click on Save Windows positions now
Untick Save Window positions on Exit

4. When the layout is totally screwed up. Click on Reset Saved Window Positions to Default Values.

5. Restart Gimp. You get Gimp in default three window mode.
Enable Windows -> Single Window Mode
Go back to Edit -> Preferences -> Window Management
Click on Save Windows positions now
Untick Save Window positions on Exit
