Messing around on my little netbook and got pattern-along-path to work reasonably well.

That looks great. That is Inkscape? What does inkscape have that GIMP doest?

Inkscape is a vector drawing application. I mentioned it before, because Macromedia Freehand used in that old tutorial is also a vector drawing application. Inkscape is very different from Gimp, which is a raster graphics editor.
